My understanding is that this is the primary reason digigold
exists: anonymous digital cash.  E-gold is the "banking system" and
digigold is the cash in circulation.  Or something like that; I'm not
too
clear on the exact terminology.

Digigold badly needs to be documented; it's very much an engineering
demo
rather than a product, at this point, IMHO.  Nothing some documentation
and a little user interface work wouldn't fix.

Time.  And market.  Soon, thanks to services like www.freedom.net and
freenet.sourceforge.net, anonymous web access and publishing will become
much more commonplace.  After that, the need for anonymous payment
services begins to arise.
