For the curious...

The ISO spec gives 5 pieces of information for each currency: Entity, 
Currency, Alphabetic Code, Numeric Code and Minor Unit.

For example, the British pound is denominated thus :

Entity = United Kingdom
Currency = Pound Sterling
Alphabetic Code = GBP
Numeric Code = 826
Minor Unit = 2

The Andorran Peseta is :

Entity = Andorra
Currency = Andorran Peseta
Alphabetic Code = ADP
Numeric Code = 020
Minor Unit = 0

Gold, on the other hand is :

Entity = "Entity not applicable"
Currency = "Gold" (no unit given)
Alphabetic Code = XAU
Numeric Code = 959
Minor Unit = "N.A."
