• steal code from aviplay (or other app) to use win32 dlls
  • DENT: this needs some reshuffling of the plugin loading system - so we can transparently load whatever plugin we like - but is for sure an interresting idea - anyone willing to code a proof of concept?

• fullscreen mode / hide ui
  • JUSTIN The SDL plugin will do fullscreen, just press return. Doing this hides the UI. Furthermore, SDL can be make to use Xvideo.
  • DENT Xv and MGA can also do fullscreen

• 4-channel audio - alot of people have extra sound cards.
  2 channels + 2 channels = surround sound. Audio output in Linux should be easy, just have to tell OMS which audio device is for which channel (front/back).
  This is theoretically possible, but synchronizing the two cards would likely be very hard. For a fuller discussion see http://www.linuxdj.com/audio/quality/

  Perhaps an inaccurate version. Somewhere (perhaps in guide at http://www.opensound.com/pguide/ ??) there is a note about why you can't do surround sound with multiple cards. There is no way to syncronize IO between the cards. They run on different clocks. Maybe this is only a concern for high-end applications though. A poor-man's hack may be possible. Send in a patch.   Some audio drivers (alsa, openal) support rear channels. I hacked a version of ac3dec to work with four channel sound-- however, it is quite old. Both alsa and ac3dec's interface have changed in the interim. libac3's downmix.c should be modified to produce four/six channel sound. For instance, create downmix_2f_2r_to_4ch to put the correct samples in a buffer twice normal size. Then create a libao plugin that decodes this buffer, routing the samples to two different pcm devices... ALSA is supposed to have some of this functionality, but their prerelease code is in rather sorry shape. (JeremyErwin)

  I believe ac3dec does not decode the LFE (low frequency effects, sometimes called (inaccurately) subwoofer) channel. I am not sure what is involved in decoding this, but, should six speaker support be integrated in ac3dec/oms, lfe support would be useful. A two/four channel mix can also be enhanced by adding lfe into the downmix. (JeremyErwin)

  ALSA would be an excellent starting point to support. To get your card supported, get the ALSA drivers (for working cards, or hack for unsupported). Then ac3dec only has to worry about the ALSA interface (for starters).

• VGAless operation
  For people with the Creative Dxr2, it would be cool if the mouse cursor could be displayed on the Dxr2's tv-out. This would be usefull to people who have the dxr2 hook up to a TV set and would like to remove the VGA moniter from their family room.
