BUYING A NEW COMPUTER THIS CHRISTMAS?
By Ken Newbold
Before you buy a new computer ask yourself how many other major products in your house you have purchased from companies operating just from a mobile phone number and with no proper business premises.
A lot of people have purchased computers from such companies and then visit our shop with Microsoft Windows problems. This occurs because when they purchase the PC they are not supplied with a Windows operating disc and license sticker. You the customer will then have to pay 125.00 euros to obtain a genuine licence.
If you don’t have a licence, when you go online to carry out Windows updates the operation will be refused by Microsoft. These updates are necessary to update and block any weakness in the system that hackers spot, which they then use to obtain your user names, passwords, bank details etc.
When buying a new computer:
1. Are you buying from a registered company? Ask to see their registration documents. All registered companies are required by law to have a complaints book available, which will help with any complaints to the consumer department in Almería, and help protect your consumer rights.
2. Will you receive a proper invoice with company details which will be required when making claims under manufacturer warranties?
3. If you are buying a laptop the Windows licence will be attached to the machine and you will be provided with a restore disk or instructions on how to create one.
