THIS SEASON’S HAIR - FASHIONS AND STYLES

By Zoë Haynes

Just recently I went to a hair and beauty trade exhibition in Madrid, which showcased the latest fashions and styles. I couldn’t help but notice the large number of hair extension stands, which means that extensions are very big at the moment in the hairdressing industry. I think these are a must-have accessory for all of us who like a change!

I was also blown away by the different updos for this season, and had the pleasure of meeting the UK’s Patrick Cameron, who never fails to impress me with how he creates such works of art from putting up hair. We spoke about how this season’s in updos are total opposites: classic smooth, sophisticated or messy rock-punk chick styles. How opposite can you get!

Clients ask me what’s in fashion at the moment all the time. From looking at the fashion shows and magazines, and from going to hair exhibitions, I would say there is not currently one trend to follow. But here is a hot fashion list of what is in now:

PUNK CHOPPY STYLES
With panels of colour than enhance texture stand out against a background of colour.

THE BOB
This was Vidal Sassoon’s invention for Mary Quant, and I think it is a style which won’t date for years to come. It is so versatile and suits every face shape. Whether you go for a one length precision cut bob or a choppy layered bob, a short bob or a long bob, you’re in fashion.

Colours: Make your one length bob look glossy with an all over semi-colour. For more textured bobs, add an abstract colour underneath for a more modern look.

LONG HAIR
If you want long sleek hair, note it must be in excellent condition and cut well, with sharp lines or softly layered, showing in cut lines.

Colours: Opt for glossy natural looks, multi-tonal colouring effects, or to be really in fashion, use a fashion crazy colour positioned at one side through the corner of the fringe down the side of the hair.

FRINGES
Side, blunt fall fringes are still in.

LONG CURLY HAIR
When I say curly, I don’t mean permed. Please don’t think a perm will create any of the curly styles you see in magazines or on the TV, because believe me, they won’t. These styles are created with hair straighteners, tongs and different techniques. Ask your stylist how you can create these looks yourself.

Colours: Curly hair doesn’t reflect light well, so it doesn’t shine as much as straight hair. Keep hair in good condition and go for glossy all-over colours or multi-tonal colours finely weaved through hair.

MALE GROOMING
We are seeing more of a set change in men’s fashion this season. The in style to have is an asymmetric cut, which can be versatile and create different looks, from smooth and slick to punk and rock.

Colours: Enhance your natural colour with semi-permanents to add shine. Have highlights in panels so they create a contrast look, or for the totally fashion conscious, go for an all over bleached look – you have to use an ash toner that will give the hair a cool, grey look.

UPDOS
Classy, neat avante guarde pin pups are a little tricky to do yourself, so ask your stylist to be creative. I loved the punk messy pin ups featured at the Madrid show, which create a Mohawk and are very in, although my mother didn’t agree with me and went more for the elegant, sophisticated updos.

Hair pieces are great for adding more length and volume to upstyles, while accessories add the finishing touches.

This is the insider’s information on what’s happening now, but please remember that fashion is what suits you, and what looks fab on one person may look totally ridiculous on another.
