Large Linux Systems
Below follow some claims about the largest/fastest Linux installations.
Some of these are unverified/apocryphal.
Largest Possible
- The ext2fssupports file systems up to 4 terabytes.
- The ext2fssupports filenames up to 255 characters,
which can be increased
to 1012 by recompiling the kernel appropriately.
Non-Linux Largest
- The
largest (online, SQL) database in 1998 was from UPS, storing
16 terabytes of online data, running on DB2 on a S/390 mainframe.
- Petroleam exploration companies, Nasa, etc have large data repositories'
but these are not kept live, on-line.
